Good news!! On July 13 the Board of Collier County Commissioners voted down the problematic ordinance for a sanctuary county for the Bill of Rights at a 7 ½ hour marathon meeting with over 120 speakers pro and con. Thank you to all of our members who emailed the Commissioners ahead of the meeting and who testified or attended the meeting online and in person.
Co-President Janet Hoffman and Vice President Diane Moore represented the league and gave compelling testimony hailed as non-partisan, objective and superbly delivered. And in the end Democracy Prevailed! Not only does this outcome protect the residents of our county but it helps to slow down the spread of this harmful initiative throughout Florida and the nation. Our leaders have been advised by LWVFL and LWVUS where we are seen as leading the league on this issue. Links to Janet and Diane’s remarks are provided below.
You will agree that this is a terrific start to a new season. Thank you to all who helped bring about this victory as we continue our mission: Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.
We can express our thanks to the commissioners who voted no:
