Education

Our Mission

The mission of the Education Committee is to support the education of Collier County residents from early childhood through postsecondary education.

We support a free public school system in Collier County with high standards for student achievement and with equal educational opportunity for all that is financed adequately by the state through equitable funding formulas. We believe that community support, accomplished educators, and a superintendent and school board that value collaboration, respect, and trust are vital to the success of our schools and our students. We support an adequately funded public higher education system that is accessible and unbound by restrictions to academic freedom.

Program Plan 2024-2025

  1. By March 2025, educate the community and advocate publicly on at least two pieces of education-related state legislation and one main priority of the Collier County Public Schools Superintendent.

  2. By January 2025, demonstrate support of our public schools and promote among ALL Collier residents an understanding of public education as a public good through establishing a collaborative initiative with at least two other community organizations that will involve at least two activities such as offering a community forum, maintaining visibility at public meetings, establishing contacts with legislators, and producing articles and educational materials in several languages.

  3. Throughout the entire year, maintain informed committee status by having at least one committee member attend or view online every regular Collier County School Board meeting and report relevant issues at each committee meeting. Advocate for action, as appropriate, by making at least one public comment at a School Board meeting or writing letters to the editor and opinion pieces (with permission if under LWVCC).

  4. Promote understanding and advocacy concerning legislation related to colleges and universities through posting at least one article synthesis per month on our Education blog and establishing contact with three faculty or administrators at FGCU and FSW to understand effects of recent legislation. As appropriate, the committee will coordinate with LWV Florida Education Action on at least one higher education initiative or lobbying effort by March 2025.

  5. By the end of March 2025, increase civic understanding by coordinating the Know Your County Government (KYCG) program, in collaboration with the Collier County Public Schools (CPCPS) and 4 H (University of Florida Collier Branch), for up to 40 juniors and seniors in our high schools.
