About this event

Hot Topic: National Popular Vote

Things are moving on the National Popular Vote! Suzanne Low, JD, the LWVCC Chair and Floridians for National Popular Vote District Chair will be updating us on new developments.

The National Popular Vote (NPV) will guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and D.C. combined. It replaces the winner take all state-by-state system effective in 48 states today and does not require a constitutional amendment. To date NPV has become law in 19 jurisdictions, representing 222 of the 270 electoral votes needed to activate it. So we are 82% of the way toward NPV being the law of the land - no more swing states!

NPV will ensure that every citizen’s vote will be equal throughout the U.S., regardless of where you live, and that every vote in every state will matter in every presidential election. Virginia is the latest state to enact the NPV law and officially added its 13 electoral votes. We anticipate an opportunity in Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin for obtaining the 48 electoral votes needed before 2028. But it takes time. It took six years to get the bill passed in New York.
