SCAM ALERT!!!

Several committee chairs recently received an email purportedly from Paula Schwerin saying something like "I am in the process of working on a project and would greatly value your assistance with it. Kindly inform me if you are free today." The sender notes Paula's name, but the email address is NOT Paula's email. The same problem occurred earlier this year with messages that claimed to be from Diane Moore. If you receive an email from Paula or any League member that you suspect may be a scam, please call or email the sender to confirm that it is a valid email using the contact information you can find in our website Member Directory; do not reply to the suspect message. Please forward any scam message that purports to come from someone in the League to techteam@lwvcolliercounty.org.

NO LEAGUE LEADER WILL EVER ASK YOU BY EMAIL OR TEXT TO PURCHASE GIFT CARDS IN AID OF A PROJECT.
ANNOUNCING THE LWV POSITION
ON THE FEDERAL JUDICIARY

In June 2025, the LWVUS Board adopted a position on the Federal Judiciary. For many years, the League had positions on the Executive and Legislative branches of the federal government but had no corresponding position on the Federal Judiciary. Following the longstanding League practice of undertaking a study, then arriving at member understanding and agreement, 321 Leagues from 45 states and the District of Columbia participated in the Federal Judiciary Study process. LWVCC was proud to take part in the study. During our Consensus Meeting in March 2025, we explored the overarching principles of transparency, accountability, independence, and ethics as they related to the federal judiciary, and our responses to specific consensus questions were submitted to LWVUS. LWVUS compiled the responses of all participating Leagues to determine where consensus was reached. The result was the LWVUS Position on the Federal Judiciary.

According to LWVUS, “the League believes the elements of this position contribute to judicial integrity and are essential to a strong democracy. These elements exemplify what the League expects from the federal courts, building trust and buttressing the Courts’ legitimacy. Adherence to the principles of accountability, transparency, independence, and ethics ensures both a strong federal judiciary and a stronger democracy.”
