Leveraging New Frontiers in Science
to Restore and Protect Our Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are the backbone for ~25% of all marine life while also providing an array of benefits to local communities. The coral reefs provide coastal protection through wave attenuation, maintain commercial and recreational fish stocks, and support tourism through activities such as snorkeling and diving. The Florida Reef Tract is the world's third largest reef system, reaching from the Dry Tortugas to Martin County, the ecological backbone of Florida. Unfortunately, this once vibrant coastal treasure once teeming with life has been reduced from reefs to rubble within only 50 years.

Dr. Bradley Weiler is a postdoctoral researcher, in the Coral Program for the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies, at the University of Miami, a NOAA Center of Excellence. He will provide an impactful dive into the drivers of coral reef decline, the research combating these threats, and the conservation approaches required to revitalize these underwater rainforests.

Maggie Winchester-Weiler, the Ocean Conservancy’s Florida Conservation Program Manager, and our April luncheon speaker will follow with a brief update on the broad work of NOAA in Florida
