Every 20 years since 1977, a Commission is appointed to examine and propose changes to Florida’s Constitution, as required by the Constitution itself. The 2017-2018 Constitution Revision Commission was the third of its kind in history. Starting in the spring of 2017, the Commission held public hearings throughout the state for citizens to share ideas and provide input on potential changes. Taking the suggestions into consideration, the Commission deliberated and recommended constitutional amendments that will appear on the November 2018 ballot.
League members participated as individuals throughout the process. In 2017, Carol Weissert, Director of the Roy Collins Institute at Florida State University, informed members about past CRC. Members spoke at public hearings. At the start of 2018, CRC Commissioner Erika Donalds spoke about her experiences on the Commission.
The League of Women Voters Florida has additional information regarding the Constitution Revision Commission on its website and information on the 13 proposed amendments. A 60 percent vote will be required for each proposed amendment to pass.
