Monthly Meeting: Climate Change – In Southwest Florida – Ready or Not: An Update from Dr. Michael Savarese
February 11 @ 11:45 am - 1:30 pm
Michael Savarese is a Professor of Marine Science and Environmental Studies within the Department of Marine & Ecological Sciences and the Coastal Watershed Institute at Florida Gulf Coast University. He has been a faculty member there since the University’s opening in the fall of 1997. Mike’s teaching and research interests concern the history of environmental change in coastal settings, particularly in response to human development, climate change, and sea-level rise. Throughout his years at FGCU, he has served as a liaison between scientists and managers/decision-makers, serving in the past as the Chairperson of the Big Cypress and the Southwest Florida Restoration Coordination Teams. More recently, he has served as a community liaison to foster coastal resilience efforts throughout Southwest Florida. That local involvement includes the management of a three-year $1.0 million dollar NOAA funded grant. Mike serves as the co-principal investigator of that grant. Along with Dr. Peter Sheng from the University of Florida, he is helping our local governments and our elected leaders in Collier County, understand our vulnerability to and how to prepare for the effects of sea-level rise and increased storminess on Southwest Florida.
The League of Women Voters of Collier County is proud to continue our volunteer efforts in support of Mike’s work on the NOAA project through this second year of the grant. At our February luncheon, Mike will be updating us on the current work and results from the grant.
